As a consequence of the thematization and even problematization of migration, studies have shown major insights in its (re-)presentation and framing. Understanding the presence of different narratives and frames is important in comprehending migration as a complex and mediated phenomenon. Representation of migration influences public attitudes as well as broader social phenomena like inequality in different social domains. Additionally, these representations are inseparably connected with human relations, identity and a sense of belonging. Therefore, the objective of this research is to study the subjective experiences of young people with a migration background with ethnic-related discourses. How do they read, imagine and even identity with ethnic-related narratives? In other words, how do young people perceive themselves and others as a consequence of ethnic-related narratives.
To understand the experiences of young people with a migration background, a study has been enrolled in different school in Brussels. A one-year trajectory has been set up in which young students between 15- and 21-year’s old take part. This group of young people was chosen very carefully to involve different individuals and groups who might or might not feel addressed by certain narratives of migration. Different methodologies are combined to gain deeper insight in their experiences. Focus groups focus on individual and collective experiences and have an important advantage to create social discussions. Creative methodologies like video’s, diamond ranking and self-portraits have been used to understand the role of different factors such as close contacts and social media and their influence on their own self-image. Story completion methodologies explore the unconscious and conscious social discourses on which these young people depend in creating their own narratives. In combining these different methodologies over a longer period, we aim to produce an in-depth and comprehensive set of data.
